TARANTO STADIUM

The design for Taranto’s new Olympic Water Sports Masterplan seamlessly integrates architectural, landscape, archaeological, and environmental principles, creating a dynamic public space that reconnects the city with its coastal environment.

Our primary objectives are to strengthen the connection between the site and the urban fabric, enhance community interaction, and preserve the site’s rich archaeological and historical significance. Sustainability is at the core of the project, featuring a large, accessible green roof that serves as a venue for city-wide outdoor events and doubles as an amphitheater. Landscaped areas and pathways connect public and commercial spaces, thoughtfully framing archaeological zones to blend history with modern urban life.

The project fosters ecological regeneration through strategies that restore coastal habitats and promote sustainability. These include the use of native plant species, rain gardens, permeable pavements, and renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power, all aimed at reducing environmental impact. Climate resilience is addressed by incorporating design elements that mitigate sea-level rise and ensure structural adaptability.

Public accessibility and inclusivity are central to the design, with spaces tailored to diverse community needs, from sports and culture to recreation and social gatherings. The integration of the stadium with the surrounding urban fabric and coastline creates a seamless flow of public parks, pedestrian pathways, and green spaces, enhancing connectivity between the city and the sea.

The design also prioritizes human well-being, creating comfortable, healthy, and sustainable environments indoors and outdoors, with a focus on microclimates, thermal comfort, and air quality. It offers an experiential urban journey, inviting people to explore Taranto’s rich history as they move from the city center to the coast.

Ultimately, this project seeks to become a symbol of Taranto’s future—one that celebrates its past, embraces sustainability, and fosters a vibrant, inclusive public space.
