LECCE SOCIAL HOUSING
Info
Year: 2020
Country: Italy
Developer: Lecce Municipality
The redevelopment of the former “A. Galateo” Hospital in Lecce transforms a historic structure into a vibrant, multifunctional hub for social housing and community services. The project balances preservation and innovation, restoring the building’s rational features while integrating contemporary elements like photovoltaic shutters, modular layouts, and revised interiors.
Configured into themed blocks, the design includes residential units, a community center, coworking spaces, artisanal workshops, and vibrant landscaped areas. The historical Italian garden and a new park reconnect the site with the neighborhood, offering spaces for recreation and cultural events.
Sustainability is central, with energy-efficient systems, rainwater recycling, and improved natural lighting and ventilation. Accessibility and barrier-free design ensure inclusivity. The project revitalizes the building’s legacy, creating a model of adaptive reuse that responds to modern needs while fostering community and sustainable living.
